Rainy day activities in Marlborough: 10 ways to make the most of a wet weather day

Don’t let a little wet weather spoil your plans. While Marlborough is famous for its sunshine, every now and then the weather has other ideas. The good news? A rainy day doesn't mean your holiday has to stop. Whether you're visiting the region for a weekend, arriving off the Interislander, or simply looking for something to do as a local, there are plenty of indoor experiences that showcase the very best of Marlborough.

Here are ten of our favourite ways to spend a rainy day.

  1. Discover Marlborough's wines under one roof

Rain is the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy a leisurely wine tasting. At Wine + Food Experience Marlborough, you can discover more than 200 wines from across the region without driving between cellar doors. Using our self-serve wine dispensers, you can enjoy tasting pours, half glasses or full glasses at your own pace, learning about each winery through our interactive touchscreens as you go.

Prefer a little guidance? Our knowledgeable team is always happy to help you discover something new or recommend a wine to suit your taste. Pair your tasting with a local platter, settle in by the fire during winter, and enjoy Marlborough from the comfort of one beautiful location.

  2. Visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre

One of New Zealand's most awarded museums, the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is a must-visit regardless of the weather. Home to world-class exhibitions featuring Sir Peter Jackson's aircraft collection and immersive displays by Wētā Workshop, it's an experience enjoyed by aviation enthusiasts and families alike.

You can visit their website and grab your tickets here - https://www.omaka.org.nz/

3. Enjoy a long lunch

Sometimes the best rainy day activity is simply slowing down. Take your time over a leisurely lunch, order a shared platter, enjoy a local wine, and watch the rain outside while staying warm inside. It's the perfect excuse to spend a few hours catching up with friends or taking a break during your holiday.

4. Browse Blenheim's boutique shops

Blenheim's town centre is full of independently owned boutiques waiting to be explored. Spend an afternoon browsing fashion, gifts, homewares and local artisan products before stopping somewhere warm for a coffee or glass of wine. We’d highly recommend Thomas’s, Mcraes, Dresscode and No 4. Boutique for clothing, along with the likes of Milk and Honey and Cerise for giftware and beautifully crafted local and New Zealand made products.

5. Learn the stories behind Marlborough's wineries

Many visitors know Marlborough for Sauvignon Blanc, but there's so much more to discover. Take the wet weather as an opportunity to explore Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir and traditional method sparkling wines while learning about the people behind each label.

Rainy days are perfect for slowing down and discovering something new.

6. Warm up with coffee and something sweet

Marlborough has no shortage of fantastic cafés. Grab a locally roasted coffee, settle into a cosy corner, and enjoy one of the region's delicious pastries or sweet treats while watching the world go by. Our favourite central cafes are Thomas’s and Sons - right in the forum and you can browse their clothing and homewares while you’re there. Hakuna Matata - A slow, friendly cafe thats always bang on with the coffee. Ritual cafe - Delicious lunch option, cabinets are always full of cakes, slices and savoury goodies. For the ultimate sweet treat we highly recommend Sweet Creations - Blenheims queen of cakes, cupcakes and all things sweet!

7. Explore local art and culture

From local galleries through to the Marlborough Museum, there are plenty of opportunities to discover the stories, artists and history that have shaped the region. It's a great way to spend a quieter afternoon while supporting local creatives. Our favourite (and central) art gallery is the Marlborough Art Gallery Te Kahu o Waipuna which is located at 15 Wynen Street, only a 5 minute walk from us here at the Alfred Taylor Centre.

8. Discover local craft spirits

Wine might be Marlborough's biggest drawcard, but it's not the only thing worth tasting. Many local producers craft exceptional gin and whisky, offering another side of the region's food and beverage scene. Our favourite is local gin makers Roots Gin - an international award winning spirit which you can enjoy here at The Wine + Food Experience Marlborough.

9. Spend the afternoon by the fire

If none of these are tickling your fancy then we promise an afternoon in the fireside room with us is a perfect way to enjoy the wet weather. Winter in Marlborough has its own charm. Wrap your hands around a glass of red wine, find a seat by the fire, and enjoy an afternoon that feels worlds away from the weather outside. Sometimes the simplest moments become the most memorable

10. Turn a rainy day into one of your favourite memories

Rain often encourages us to slow down. Rather than rushing from place to place, take the opportunity to explore Marlborough a little differently with us. Discover a new wine, share a platter, learn something new, or simply enjoy spending time together. Because some of the best experiences happen when the weather doesn't go to plan.
